Biography Details

Born on March 21, 1973, in Lund, British Columbia, Stewart Butterfield spent his early years in a log cabin without running water or electricity. His family later moved to Victoria, where he developed an interest in technology and philosophy. He taught himself to code and changed his name from Dharma Jeremy Butterfield to Stewart at the age of 12. Butterfield pursued philosophy academically, earning a B.A. from the University of Victoria and an M.Phil. from Clare College, Cambridge. His career began with the co-founding of Ludicorp, which developed the photo-sharing platform Flickr. After Flickr's acquisition by Yahoo! in 2005, he continued to innovate in the tech space. In 2009, Butterfield co-founded Tiny Speck, which developed the game Glitch. Although the game was not commercially successful, the internal communication tool created during its development evolved into Slack. Launched in 2013, Slack revolutionized workplace communication and was acquired by Salesforce in 2021. Beyond his professional achievements, Butterfield is known for his introspective nature and commitment to thoughtful design. He married Jennifer Rubio, co-founder of Away, in 2020, and they have two children together. He also has a child from a previous marriage to Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr.
