Born in Kutch, Gujarat, to Baldev Singh Verma and Sarala Devi, he was raised in Pune, Maharashtra, in a Rajasthani Hindu family with four sisters. He married Rupa Ganguly (daughter of Ashok Kumar) and had no children.

 

Debuting in the 1960s, he excelled in supporting comic roles under directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Chupke Chupke, Gol Maal), Basu Chatterji, and Gulzar. Famous for films like Angoor, Andaz Apna Apna, and Rang Birangi, he won three Filmfare Best Comedian awards. He also produced and directed occasionally. He passed away in Pune at 77 due to cardiac arrest and kidney failure. His legacy of clean, witty comedy endures in tributes and timeless classics.
