From a Bengali Hindu family, he studied chemistry at Scottish Church College and acting at FTII Pune. Debuting with Mrigayaa (1976; National Award), he became a superstar in the 1980s with disco films like Disco Dancer (1982), earning global fame.

 

He delivered hits in action, comedy, and drama, with over 350 films. Married to Yogeeta Bali since 1979, father to four (including actors Mahaakshay and Namashi). He owns Monarch Hotels and vast properties. A former Rajya Sabha MP (2014-2016), he joined BJP in 2021 and campaigns actively.
