He excelled in parallel cinema (Junoon, Kalyug) and international films.

 

Married to Jennifer Kendal (1958–1984), father to Kunal, Karan, and Sanjana. He produced acclaimed films and supported Prithvi Theatre. Honored with Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke, he passed away in Mumbai at 79 due to liver cirrhosis and kidney failure.
